God works through each of us. Therefore, the real power is found in a one-on-one relationship with God. The Bible realistically portrays humanity and how God often uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. Sometimes we make poor choices. We have human weaknesses, but God encourages us through them. Let’s take a look at Elijah.
Elijah was a very powerful man of God, but he had some issues, as we all do. He experienced many miraculous feats by God. But he became worn out and tired. Jezebel threatened to kill him. (1 Kings 19:1) He wanted to die, but angel came and fed him. He was strengthened by that food and went 40 days and 40 nights without eating again until he reached the mountain of God.
Forty days and nights is significant in bible–Moses, Noah, the spies that went into Canaan. And then there was Goliath who ran around the mount of battle 40 days until David came; Jesus tempted in the wilderness; 40 days from Jesus’ death to His ascension. Why is Forty so significant? Maybe from God’s perspective that’s how long it takes to get his message into our hearts.
He arrived at Mount Horeb (1 Kings 19:8). Mount Horeb is the same place where Moses saw the burning bush; the same mountain where water came from the rock when struck by Moses; the same place where God hid Moses in the cleft of the rock as His glory passed by. Mount Horeb was the place God chose to give Elijah information about the reformation of Israel.
Mount Horeb was God’s special place. God has a special place for people. God has special place for each one of us—somewhere where it is quiet where we can hear his voice. We all need periods of silence in our lives in a special place where we can be with God.
Elijah found refuge in a cave, and the Lord asked him, “What are you doing here Elijah?” (1 Kings 19:9). If God asks you that, maybe you aren’t in the right place. But it is amazing that regardless we end up where God wants us to be. Elijah answered he was the only one left, they sought to take his life. (1 Kings 19:10). As usual, satan uses discouragement against us. This discouragement turned Elijah into a pessimist. But God understood that Elijah was a human, and He understands that about us also. God sees us in our struggles.
Finally, God whispers to Elijah (1 Kings 19:11-14). Elijah didn’t see God in the fire, wind or earthquake, but saw Him in the whisper. God got Elijah out of discouragement by giving him a new mission and a new assignment. God sent him to anoint a new king.
As long as you are on the earth, you will have a purpose and calling.
When discouraged, there are 2 things you will go: magnify the bad and minimize the good. But as long as you are on the earth, God will give you a purpose and a calling.
God ministers in a small still voice. When someone whispers you need to be quiet and lean over to them. When was the last time you got quiet and leaned over to God and listened to His voice?
God is still speaking to you no matter what is going on no matter what distractions you are faced with.
