Without a doubt, Jesus has asked that we continue to follow Him.  See: Colossians 2:6, John 12:26, John 8:12

The question is though, are you a Fan of Jesus, or are you a Follower of Jesus.  There’s a big difference. Take the rich young ruler… he was a fan of Jesus..but when Jesus asked him to be a follower, he walked away.

Jesus explains what a follower is, best set forth in the Amplified Version of Mark 8:34: “If anyone wishes to follow Me [as My disciple], he must deny himself [set aside selfish interests], and ^[a]take up his cross [expressing a willingness to endure whatever may come] and follow Me [believing in Me, conforming to My example in living and, if need be, suffering or perhaps dying because of faith in Me].
